We have received the sad news that former staff member Stephen/Steve Oxlade died on the morning of 17 June, aged 81, after a very short illness in Bournemouth hospital.

Steve was a Chemistry teacher at Shiplake College between 1968 and 1973, he was also a rowing coach and coached the 1st VIII in 1973. He also ran the Beagling Society. He also taught at Pangbourne College, Monkton Combe School, Cheltenham College, and Bryanston School. He had a natural gift for encouraging others—whether in the classroom or on the water—and took great pride in seeing young people grow in confidence and skill.

The above photo was taken just before they raced at HRR, present in the photo:

Back row: Steve Oxlade, Alex Rant, Mike Pike, Gavin Thomas, Steve Weller, Jonathan Skipper (Sub)

Front row: Ian Cruickshank, Simon Varnas, David Tchang (Cox), David Dalzell, Malcolm Carmichael.

Away from work, Stephen felt most at home in the outdoors. He embraced adventure wholeheartedly, whether walking in the Lake District, exploring the Scottish islands, or making his way along the southern coastal path. He relished time spent on rowing tours, by the water with a fishing rod, or camping under open skies. These were the moments that brought him real joy, especially when shared with family and friends.

A devoted husband to De, a much-loved father to Simon and Edward, and a proud grandfather to Lara, Stephen’s family was at the centre of his life. He will be remembered for his kindness, quiet humour, and the deep care he showed to those closest to him.

Stephen's funeral will be family only.
