Charitable giving and community support are at the heart of our values. Every year, each house selects a charity to support, while the prefects choose a cause for their Prefect Fundraising Day. We also support Gap Africa and CIRDIC every year through annual fundraising initiatives. The Parents' Association also play a key role in fundraising, and we support regular giving schemes, such as donations to Oddballs Foundation through bobble hat sales.
Last year, thanks to the generosity of pupils, parents and staff we raised an incredible £33,578.81 for a range of charities.
The College has also been associated with the charity Gap Africa for over thirty years and every year each of the houses will sponsor a child in Kenya by raising the funds required for him or her to attend secondary school, which is not free in Kenya. Every other year there is a whole school sponsored walk, for which Gap Africa is the sole or main beneficiary.
We also actively support CIRDIC (Churches in Reading Drop-In Centre for the Homeless), with pupils, parents, parents and staff generously donating food, toiletries and essential items during our annual Harvest Collection. CIRDIC provides vital support for homeless people in our community, offering hot meals, showers, clean clothes and access to specialist services.
This year the prefect team have chosen to support Road Peace. This charity helps bereaved people by providing peer support and connecting victims with others similarly affected by a road death. They also help with police investigations, inquests and court procedures that may follow a road accident that are often unfamiliar and disorientating. £25 pays for Road Peace to send out an information pack to a family with guides and information on navigating the justice system, £100 pays for our caseworker to attend a meeting with the police or CPS with a bereaved family. £500 funds a place for a bereaved family member to attend our resilience building support programme. £1000 pays for the operating cost of our helpline for a month!
The prefects will be hosting a non-uniform day and laser tag event on the 4 April to raise funds for Road Peace. You can find out more about the charity and donate to Road Peace via their website here.
Our Parents' Association play a crucial role in supporting a range of charitable causes.
At the PA Summer Ball last year, £14,000.00 was raised for Alexander Devine Hospice - a local charity that provides specialist care and vital support to babies, children and young people with life-limiting and life-threatening conditions.
The Summer Ball featured a raffle and silent auction with generous donations from local businesses and individuals. Parents in attendance showed passionate support, bidding enthusiastically and giving generously throughout the night.
The donation will make a lasting impact on the children and families supported by Alexander Devine. Thank you to the PA and to everyone who supported!
Every year the Shiplake Charities Committee, made up of pupils from across the year groups and houses, decide on the year's chosen charities and agree how to raise funds. Each house choses a charity to support and comes up with creative ways to raise funds.
