Photography students were treated to an inspiring session today as two Old Vikings, Brad Wilkins (18S) and Toby Coles (21O), returned to Shiplake to share their career journeys in the photography industry.
Since leaving Shiplake in 2021, Toby has followed a more traditional route, attending university to gain a formal education in film amd media before stepping into the professional world. In his first year post-university, he has recently joined content creation agency, Polar Media House, co-founded by Brad and OV (and Shiplake photography teacher) Conor Crowe (17O). This is allowing him to gain industry experience and refining his craft in a professional environment.
In contrast, Brad has taken a more hands-on approach since leaving the College in 2018, co-founding Polar Media House and learning through direct industry experience. He is a freelance videographer with six years of experience, working across a diverse range of projects, including advertising, social media content, podcasts, and documentaries through his company, Visuals By Brad.
Offering two contrasting paths into the photography industry, their discussions were designed to offer students a well-rounded perspective on career progression, demonstrating the academic and practical approaches. They were able to connect their insights back to what students have learned in the classroom at Shiplake, helping them understand how those lessons translate into real-world opportunities.
It was great to have you back Brad and Toby - thank you for talking to our pupils!
