Shiplake Economics Alumni Q&A

On Tuesday 15th September, the Shiplake Economics Society (aka Clubonomics) hosted its second annual Shiplake Economics Alumni Q&A.

For the event we invited some past pupils (via TEAMS) who have gone on to study economics at university to answer questions fielded by our current year 13 pupils. The Year 13s are in the process of making their UCAS applications, so this was a timely event to allow our current pupils to get some vital information about what studying economics at university is really like.

This year, the alumni panel consisted of:

Richard Wang, Newcastle University graduate (Shiplake 2018 cohort)

Edward Houghton, Cardiff University entering year 3 (Shiplake 2019 cohort)

Jacob Read, Liverpool University entering year 3 (Shiplake 2019 cohort)

Theo Sanders, Exeter University, entering year 2 (Shiplake 2020 cohort)

We also had input from Joe Rogers (2019), Sam Gillen (2019) and Finn Baike (2021), who couldn't join the meet, but gave their advice through writing.

Questions included asking for tips for study/revision, how much maths was involved in university economics, the pros and cons choosing of business economics degrees vs straight economics degrees and who their favourite economics Youtubers were.

We hope to continue to run this as an annual event and are very grateful for the Shiplake Economics Alumni who volunteered their time to make it happen.

Stuart Read, Head of Economics.
