Davies Shield Success and Celebration

It was fantastic to see so many Old Vikings and members of the Shiplake community at the Davies Shield on Wednesday. The support of school community no doubt contributed to the Shiplake victory!

Last Wednesday 16 October 2024 saw the return of the highly anticipated Davies Shield rugby match where our current First XV put on a spectacular performance against Aylesbury Grammar. The event was made all the more special by the presence of many members of the Old Viking community who returned to show their support, cheering on the boys from the sidelines!

The day began with a special gathering for Old Vikings as they took a nostalgic tour of the school, including a stop in Orchard House where our returning rugby captains, such as Ian Baldry (72E), John Falk (71B),  Mark Broad (78O) and Chris Howie (86O) were able to point out some familiar names on our rugby board. A delicious lunch was then held in the Stretch Tent, pitchside where OVs reconnected about their memories of the College. Nostalgia was in the air as everyone got a look at team photographs and rugby action shots from the 1970s brought in by OV Guy Panszczyk (73S). Guy even handed round his original Shiplake rugby shirt from 1972 and we were reminded how during that time the school paid to copyright the colour of the strip to make sure it was always recognisably Shiplake! As OVs swapped stories of their time at school, it was clear how playing rugby and sport have become their fondest memories of being a pupil at the College.

Unlike last year's torential conditions, the rain held off as the entire school - pupils and teachers alike - lined the sidelines in full force joining parents and OVs, ranging from last years leavers to alumni from the 1960s. The energy and enthusiasm from supporters throughout the match created an electric atmosphere and encouraged some incredible play from our Shiplake side! Members of the Shiplake community who could not make the event in person were able to watch the livestream of the game at home which was accompanied by commentary from Old Viking Sam Bourke (22W). The strength of support and passion on the sidelines no doubt played a part in the spectacular performance from the first XV, who delivered an impressive 38-17 victory!

Congratulations to the first XV on a well-earned win, and a heartfelt thank you to the Old Vikings, parents and members of the Shiplake community for making this year's Davies Shield truly unforgettable. The support and pride you continue to show for sport at the school serves as an inspiration to all, and we look forward to welcoming you back for many matches to come.
